PIDC board approves Rs 200 million for SDCs in earthquake hit areas LAHORE, Dec 06: The board of directors of Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) here Monday approved an amount of Rs 200 million for the establishment of eight Skill Development Centres (SDCs) in earthquake hit areas of Azad Kashmir and NWFP. The meeting presided over by Federal Minister for Industries, Production and Special Initiatives, Mr. Jahangir Khan Tareen was attended by Federal Secretary Industries and Production, Syed Zaheer Ali Shah, Chairman Technology Upgradation and Skill Development Company (TUSDEC) , Mr. Almas Hyder, Chief Executive Officer, PIDC, Abdul Bari Khan and other board members. "These centres will become operational by April to train youth in different skills and trades especially in construction and tourism and hospitality," Mr. Tareen said while talking to mediamen after the meeting. He said that the project to be executed by TUSDEC in Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Balakot and Batgram , would not only contribute significantly to the reconstruction activity in the areas affected by October 8 tremor but also be helpful in bringing down the incidence of poverty. He said that the Muzaffarabad centre would also have the facility for training in the skill of furniture manufacturing. Tareen said that these centres would be run by the local executive committees. He said that pre-fabricated steel structures would house these skill development centres. He hoped that more than 4000 youth would get training in eight different skills in a period of one year. Talking about the efforts being made by the government to upgrade technology in the industrial sector, he said that TUSDEC would set up a Tools, Dies and Moulds Centre (TDM) in Karachi and added that foundation stone laying ceremony of this centre would be held next month. He said that similar centres would be set up in Gujranwala and other industrial towns of the country. Earlier, General Manager (Skill Development), TUSDEC Col (rtd) Syed Anwar Ali Pervez gave briefing on the projects being initiated by the company for technology upgradation and skill development in the country.
